San Antonio, Tejas
I just got back from San Antonio (SA), site of the 2007 Kiwanis International Convention. I had a good time but learned a few things about convention attending while there.
1. Conventions are really just social gatherings.
I think I must be part autistic or something, because I actually went into this thinking this would be mostly about the By-Law amendments and seminars. Of course, it turned out to be mostly an excuse to take tours around SA, eat lots of good Texas BBQ and chat with old friends. I’ve only been in Kiwanis a bout three years and didn’t talk to anyone in my local division before the trip so of course I had very few people to talk to. I had some fun anyway but next time, I will prepare better by arranging meals and what not with whoever else might be going.
2. Texas is hot and muggy in the summer.
Well, duhhhhh. But even worse it rained hot rain down on us some of the time. The improvement would be to bring more shirts so I could have changed more than twice a day.
3. The group’s selected hotel is not always the best choice.
I actually came out on the right side of this one. The hotel my Kiwanis District was staying in was one of those 15-story urban places but I reserved my room too late to get in there. Instead, I stayed at the smaller, more cozy place just a bit down the block and it was much more my style. It had a nicer layout, fewer people and gave me an excuse to walk a bit more around town, which was fine (except for item #2 above).
Anyway, here are some pictures.
